Amazing Food

I didn't stay overnight, but had a tour of the hotel and would recommend it to anyone staying in Lamu. The food at the restaurant is excellent.

There is no better hotel anywhere in Lamu

I have traveled in 8 countries this year on business and was lucky enog to be booked in Lamu House by a travel agent in Nairobi. The Belgian couple who own the hotel are very present, extremely friendly, and treat you as family. The rooms are decorated in a Swahili style, gorgeous and well sized with private balconies. The restaurant is outstanding and well-priced. This is by far the best hotel I've stayed at during my travels this year.

A hotel that honors the spirit of the place

I have spent many days in past in Lamu and I don't know how I overlooked this gem of a hotel on the seafront. Perhaps, it's location at the southern end of the seafront road explains some of that. Away from the noise and hustle of the center of Lamu Town, it occupies a quietly meditative corner of the town where you can sit in the terraced cafe, have a cup of coffee or your meal, and watch the local citizenry stroll by without being fussed over. The building is a beautiful re-creation of Swahili luxe and grandeur without the gaudy bric-a-brac associated with less confident establishments. It's true to the spirit of the island, and we were pleasantly surprised by the cool serenity and elegance of the interior. The proprietors have spent a lot of time (without being obvious about it) in furnishing it with authentic touches of coastal culture from the antiques to the landscaping. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a meal or as a cool retreat from a day wandering in the fantasia warren of alleys, shadows, and light!

Absolute Perfection

My husband & I are international humanitarian aid volunteers. Each year we spend a couple of weeks in some desperate areas of Kenya providing help & care. Then we pamper ourselves with a week of R&R somewhere on the ocean to revitalize. Thanks to our friend Elphas at Africa Untamed Wilderness Adventures, this year we wound up in the penthouse at the Lamu House Hotel directly on the waterfront in the world heritage site of Lamu’s Old Town. This charming boutique hotel exceeded our wildest expectations. It has everything—incredible location, gourmet food & wine, stunning rooms (Juu—the uppermost room—was just totally redone & has three furnished balconies offering panoramic overviews of Old Town, the sea, & much of the rest of the island There is a wonderful ” hands on” management & staff that cater to your every need. Managers Frank & Marianne are happy to arrange anything, from sailing dhows to diving trips to walking tours. There is no need to use outside vendors—as a matter of fact, don’t! Go no further than the front desk for premium quality excursions for the best possible prices & NO hassles. I had read about this hotel in Conde Nast, but it took Elphas to convince me it is the real deal. Wow, was he ever right! If you’re looking for an oasis of beauty & serenity right in the center of a vibrant & bustling island culture: Lamu House is the perfect place. Our experience there is one we’ll cherish forever. I don’t say this lightly—we have traveled in Africa since 1984—but the staff at Lamu House have raised the bar on personalized, excellent service & the venue itself is unique & simply incomparable. We fully recommend Lamu House: you will not regret choosing this little piece of heaven. Jean & Tom Penny, St Augustine, FL USA (omitting photos--have a suspicion that previous attempts to add 4 to this review have somehow caused the whole review to go missing & unacknowledged)
Room Tip: Go for Juu--it has everything you could wish for & more. Lots of stairs but it's well worth the climb.

Charming hotel, great food, local feel

We stayed here for a week on a mix of holiday and business. We had a fabulous stay.

I had heard that Lamu Town was noisy, but in our room (top floor) all we could hear was wind and waves, and occasionally the call to prayer. It was well worth being located in the middle of authentic Lamu Town, instead of isolated in Shela village. If you want a quiet beach vacation, choose Shela. But if you are interested in the cultural experience of Lamu, then Lamu House is the place to stay.

We loved the airy design of the hotel, the art and the architecture. A highlight was the restaurant - fabulous food. We were surprised at how good it was, especially the fresh fruit, seafood and Swahili spices. Good service. Great breakfast.

The owners (Belgian, I think?) were attentive, well informed and involved in the local community.

We did a walking tour with Mohammad and would recommend it (the hotel can arrange it for you). A lovely and informative guide.
