About Makubwa House
The house dates from the late 19th Century and has been restored in great detail, with all new electricity wiring, a Yemeni-inspired tower that is home to the water storage and a plunge pool on the main floor. The house is of palatial proportions and takes on a magical character at night.
Accommodation
This Stately Patrician home features 2-bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and a large private studio rooftop terrace.
The master bedroom has a king-size bed and its own air conditioning unit. The guestroom has a queen-size bed. All rooms have their own ensuite bathroom. There are two additional single beds for children and near the swimming pool on the main floor there is a double bed. If you require additional beds this can be arranged.
The Artist's Residence
Makubwa House offers residencies to professional or non-professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video and any other art form.
Living together with other creative people in a magnificent environment can only stimulate your creative process; be that finishing your video editing projects, your first novel, your last choreography or any of your many projects.
Our mission at Makubwa House Artists' Residence is to support and feed the creative process for our guests by providing a supportive, majestic and exotic environment.
The pure Swahili Culture feel of Makubwa House will inspire you and your colleagues to great artistic exchanges while taking a break from your everyday big city life.
We strive to attract artists from all over the world so that socializing at Makubwa House will have a cosmopolitan flavor bringing many different languages to the big mahogany dining table at Makubwa House.

Services of Ali Maulidi the Houseman are included. Expenses for food will usually not exceed $10-20 a day. Ali will make you breakfast and an authentic Swahili dinner with freshly-squeezed juices every evening.
Make sure to bring your favourite drinks and delicacies as you are unlikely to find your favourite wines, champagne and cheeses in Lamu. Depending on the season, all sorts of fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, lobster, crab, prawns and oysters can be ordered and brought to the door.

Upon confirming rates and availability, you will receive an electronic invoice and a deposit can then be made by credit card, paypal, m-pesa or bank transfer to confirm your booking.
On receipt of your deposit, we will send you a receipt, confirmation, and voucher for your stay. The balance of the rental is due prior to arrival.
