Diamond Beach Village, Manda Island Hot

Diamon Beach Village, Manda Island

Diamond Beach Village offers an alternative to the concrete hotel and is more of a rustic Robinson Crusoe experience. The Village management works very closely with the local Swahili people taking into account their culture and only using local methods and materials to create a refreshing, eco-friendly, alternative style holiday.

The Village is situated on the island of Manda, which is the sister island to Lamu. The lodge is located on the beach front with amazing views of the open ocean, Lamu island, Shela village and dhows sailing past. It is the perfect place to come and relax for days or weeks, away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Diamond Beach Backpacker's Village Manda Island

Diamond Beach Village also provides a wonderful base from which to explore the local scenery and take in the colourful Lamu culture and people. Or if you'd prefer, simply sit back, relax and luxuriate for days on end and let our friendly staff look after your every need, whether its breakfast in bed or drinks on the swing bed. They are happy to make your stay as peaceful and special as possible to ensure you get into the island pace of life.

Arrivals at Manda Island

Accommodation

At Diamond Beach Village there are six beach huts called bandas. They are traditionally designed with high windows to allow the sea breeze to flow through making them the ideal retreat from the African sunshine.

Accommodation on Manda Island

There are two single bandas, each with a double bed 4’ x 6’ and four double bandas with a double  6’ x 6’ bed. The large “family” banda is divided into two rooms, each ensuite,  and can accommodate up to five people.

Each banda  is ensuite and has a front porch, which is furnished with tables and chairs so that you can relax in privacy.   All bandas are provided with sheets, mosquito nets and towels and has solar lighting. For charging cameras, etc there is a main charging point in the library. Our very friendly room boy, Mwalimu, cleans daily and we offer a laundry service.

Banda Accommodation Lamu Islands

This truly is an eco-retreat. The floors and walls are made out of star palm which is woven locally, the roofs are a thatch of coconut palm. There is no fresh water on Manda Island so water is re-used from the sinks and showers to water the garden.

The Village also features a Tree house built on three floors around a Baobab tree.   It has a wooden veranda furnished with tables and chairs stretching around the tree.   It can sleep up to six, has two bathrooms and a large, very private garden with sun beds and swing beds. It is often referred to as the honeymooners' paradise.

Backpackers accommodation on Manda Island

The ‘yoga studio’, built for John Scott is now a chill out area for guests, with swinging chairs and beds, a library and games.   It is very easy to spend the day reading, dozing off and drinking fresh fruit juices until it’s time for cocktails at the bar.

Giant clam shells in the garden under the acacia trees act as bird baths and attract a colourful array of beautiful birds at both dawn and dusk. Sit and watch them play as you relax and enjoy your drinks. Or lie under the shade of the acacia trees on the swing beds and hammocks while listening to the lap of the Indian Ocean which is just a ten second walk away. At dusk, Diamond Beach enjoys the full view of some of the most breathtaking African sunsets. When night falls you can find your way back to your banda, lit by the shimmering light of a billion stars, over 180 degrees of perfectly clear sky. Or perhaps enjoy a moonlit swim where the shimmer of the phosphorescence is truly spectacular.

Perfect Peaceful Retreat

The beach is perfect for exploring- miles of sand, coral and clean water. Though the sea can be rough, this protected channel is swim-friendly and conducive to blissful floating.

Fresh fish, crab, calamari; home baked cookies and cakes; the perfect Bloody Mary. Quietly attentive service and a beautiful view.

Dogs game for walking as far as you want, or lolloping in the sand in the shade for a nap. They are the perfect company. Rachael is charming and helpful without being pushy and obtrusive. Hassan, Abu and the others are laid back, sociable, quick to laugh and are skillful sailors.

What is there is what is needed- everything necessary for switching off and relaxing and nothing more. Fuss free, eco-living on a beautiful, empty beach.

Bring insect repellant and ear plugs (to sleep through unfamiliar rustlings and the odd lonely dog).

What a gem!

I stayed here for six nights and regretted that I had not come sooner instead of visiting Malindi. Rachael and her staff provide excellent service and the place is just idyllic! The beach in front of the guest house is immaculate and the sea is clean and warm. The restaurant serves delicious meals from breakfast through to dinner and has amazing pizzas from a wood fired pizza oven. Boats are readily available to sail across to Lamu old town or Shela and the photo opportunities are countless both from the sea and on land both sides of the strait. The "bandas" are lovely and the staff keep them really clean and tidy. I would certainly come again, though I will bring plenty of insect repellent for the evenings! Overall a wonderful discovery and a fabulous holiday!

The Perfect Time-out

We came for five nights with our five-year-old daughter - and we all loved it. Here´s some retrospective brainstorming: The perfect location on a fine beach, best for our daughter to play. The amazing food, fresh fish braught by local fishermen in the morning, on our plates for lunch. Oh, one of the biggest culinary surprises of all Kenya: really good stone oven pizza. The beautiful dogs, Bob, Obama and Gazza, joining our expeditions to the reef at low tide. The big crab who walked our terrace one night. The beautiful sunsets, best viewed from the bar, followed by an amazing starlit sky. The birdbaths, bustling with yellow, blue and green activity. The fresh flowers every morning - also in our footwash-basin. The simple, clean and very nice bandas. The daily boatrides to Lamu or Shela - and especially that one in the night, which was far from "poli-poli" (slowly-slowly). And definitely not last: The overwhelmingly friendly staff, always smiling and making our stay a very pleasant experience. Plus Rachael, who really created a place worth visiting.
Thanks a lot - it was amazing.

Loved and going back!

This was the perfect beach/cultural experience for us. We are definitely into the ecolodge thing, so the low energy, cold water, grey water recycling was a refreshing experience of authentic low impact tourism.

With a two year old, we could wake up to a great breakfast and spend the day playing on the almost empty beach, or ask for a boat and head across to Shela or Lamu for a dose of European or Swahili culture. If we were feeling upscale we could go up the beach to the new hotel for drinks. Overall, the food was excellent, we got to know the staff, and we had a very relaxing week (decided to skip Malindi and Watamu to stay on Manda).

This year we go back for two weeks, next year for three?

Absolute Peace

Diamond Beach Village is a collection of grass bandas in an acre of land on a pristine beach on Manda Island near Lamu. Its a true get away from it all experience. Those seeking sophistication should look elsewhere - this is a place to abandon oneself to the sand, the sea, the wildlife and the romantic splendour of the spectacular African sun set.

If air con, down pillows and wet rooms are your thing or if you can't travel without a case full of electrical acoutrements and make up this won't be for you but if you're looking for peace and quiet, an unimagineably lovely beach and great, friendly hosts and well priced accommodation and food this will be right up your street.
We had fantastic weather during our 13 night stay but to our astonishment the beautiful beach in front of the hotel was virtually empty, save for a few local fishermen and a handful of playful dogs. We felt restored by the complete peace and lack of pretension. Rachael and Helen are extremely hospitable hosts and their staff at Diamond are an absolute delight. Food is simple and fresh, served alfresco just off the beach. Those queasy over insect life around their dinner plate might not approve but we absolutely loved it (the resort rather than the insect life!). When the generator went off at 10.00 each night we retired happy to our banda and wallowed in the luxury of an early night reading by parafin lamp.

We were extremely lazy for a fortnight but did go on the snorkelling trip to the coral reef off Manda Island on the hotel's dhow , which was great fun.

Our verdict is that Diamond is a great place to go to for a week or so and perfect for combining with a safari on the mainland, Manda being only a short hop by propeller plane from Nairobi. The lack of anywhere else of any quality to eat on Manda (including the newly opened and supposedly 5* Majlis hotel) is a slight drawback and some thrill seekers might go stir crazy after a few days but for us it was bliss.
