About Casa Papaya
At the feet of the dunes, high as hills and rich of a peculiar ecosystem of vegetation, birds and small animals, you reach Nyumba Papaya, the last house in the village of Shella.
Nyumba means house in Swahili; Papaya, because it is a sacred fruit for the owner of this house, and many plants of it are here cultivated.
Nyumba Papaya has a secret heart: its garden. High walls enclose it and protect its jungle style’s look from the strong winds.
This garden is a wide green room, with hidden corners where to seat and watch.
There is no separation from it to the house, that has all common spaces, open, so vegetation comes in and out of the columns, verandas and the terrace.
Creepers plants, tree branches and leaves of every kind pop up everywhere.
It is a garden of perfumes … white and red jasmines, frangipani and ylang ylang trees make the evening sweet.
Accommodation
In the morning birds of every kind and color sing beatiful and funny songs. The interior decoration is full of African colors, textiles and sculptures made from things found on the beach.
The house hosts four double rooms. Two have twin beds, and two are matrimonial. All are self-contained, and have large windows. Altogether the house can accommodate 8 persons. The whole house is rented to a single group at a time.
There are plenty of open spaces on the two floors and the roof terrace, all with big sofas and pillows, to comfortably lie and relax, watching the sun setting behind the dunes, or gaze at the night sky filled with stars.
The long deserted beach is reached by either walking through the small village, or directly from a pleasant path starting from the garden door leading up to the open ocean. Fantastic views from the top of the dunes.
Eliza and Daniel, who take care of the house since a long time, assist the guests kindly and discretely. They buy and prepare delicious meals – fresh fish and seafood every day.
This house is a retreat and a refuge, ideal for groups of yoga and meditation or any other creative path that needs protection and peace. Or simply a special holiday, plunged in nature, and immense spaces.

Upon confirming rates and availability, you will receive an electronic invoice and a deposit can then be made by credit card, paypal, m-pesa or bank transfer to confirm your booking.
On receipt of your deposit, we will send you a receipt, confirmation, and voucher for your stay. The balance of the rental is due via bank transfer or cash prior to or upon arrival in Lamu.
